A Culinary Tour of Thailand: From Bangkok Street Food to Northern Curries

Published: May 21, 2025 · by Emily Parker.

Thailand is a dream destination for many travelers, but for our family, it became an unforgettable food journey. With my husband and two children, we set out to explore not just temples and beaches, but also flavors—from sizzling Bangkok street food to hearty northern curries. Along the way, we discovered that food is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to connect with Thai culture, even with kids in tow.

this …

Why Thailand is Perfect for Food-Loving Families

For families, Thai food offers an incredible balance: vibrant flavors, kid-friendly options, and endless opportunities to eat well without spending much. Street vendors serve dishes quickly, portions are shareable, and there’s always rice or noodles to keep little ones happy. Plus, Thai people adore children—vendors often gave our kids extra fruit or offered a milder version of a dish.

Planning Our Culinary Adventure

We decided on a 10-day trip, dividing our time between:

  • Bangkok: bustling street food capital.
  • Chiang Mai: home of northern curries and cooking schools.
  • Phuket: coastal seafood and night markets.

For accommodations, we chose family-friendly hotels with pools (a lifesaver after spicy meals or long days). We also booked a food tour in Bangkok and a cooking class in Chiang Mai to deepen our experience.

Bangkok: A Street Food Wonderland

Pad Thai and Mango Sticky Rice in Yaowarat (Chinatown)

On our first night, we headed straight to Yaowarat Road, where neon signs lit up the street. Vendors whipped up pad thai in giant woks, flames leaping dramatically. Our kids loved watching, and the mild version with shrimp became their new favorite dish. For dessert, we couldn’t resist mango sticky rice—sweet mango slices paired with creamy coconut rice.

Boat Noodles and Satay by the Canals

The next day, we explored the canals and tried boat noodles—small bowls of rich broth with noodles and beef. The small size made them perfect for kids to sample. Later, skewers of chicken satay with peanut sauce became an easy, protein-packed snack.

Night Market Surprises

At a local night market, we let the kids choose. They picked crispy fried bananas and coconut ice cream served in a coconut shell. My husband and I went adventurous with som tam (papaya salad) and grilled squid.

Chiang Mai: Northern Thai Comfort Food

Flying north, we traded Bangkok’s energy for Chiang Mai’s relaxed pace. The old city’s night bazaars were a feast for the senses.

Khao Soi: The Dish That Stole Our Hearts

The first spoonful of khao soi—a curry noodle soup with crispy fried noodles on top—was a revelation. The broth was rich, aromatic, and just the right level of spice. Even the kids enjoyed the milder version, especially the crunchy noodle topping.

Sai Ua and Sticky Rice

At the market, we tried sai ua, Chiang Mai’s famous northern sausage, packed with herbs and spices. Served with sticky rice, it became an easy finger food for everyone.

Cooking Class Adventure

We joined a family-friendly cooking class, where the kids pounded curry paste with mortar and pestle. They proudly helped make spring rolls and tom yum soup, and the joy of cooking together became a highlight of our trip.

Phuket: Seafood Feasts by the Sea

Fresh Grilled Fish and Prawns

Phuket’s coastal charm brought us face-to-face with seafood markets. We picked fresh fish, handed it over to a grill stall, and minutes later, enjoyed it by the beach. The kids stuck with fried rice, while we savored spicy seafood curries.

Roti Pancakes for Breakfast

A surprise family favorite? Thai roti pancakes, stuffed with banana and drizzled with condensed milk. Sweet, crispy, and fun to watch being flipped on the griddle.

Night Market Vibes

Phuket’s night markets were less crowded than Bangkok’s but equally delicious. Coconut pancakes, grilled corn, and fruit smoothies became nightly rituals.

Tips for Families Eating in Thailand

  • Start mild: Many dishes can be ordered less spicy—just say “mai phet” (not spicy).
  • Street food safety: Choose busy vendors with high turnover.
  • Balance meals: Alternate spicy dishes with plain rice, noodles, or fruit.
  • Stay hydrated: Fresh fruit shakes and coconut water keep everyone cool.
  • Bring wipes: Eating with your hands is common, and things get messy.

Reflections on Our Culinary Journey

  • Kids’ Favorite: Banana roti and mango sticky rice.
  • Our Favorite: Khao soi in Chiang Mai.
  • Most Memorable Setting: Eating grilled fish on a Phuket beach while the sun set.
  • Surprising Win: Our youngest loved tom yum soup—after we asked for a gentle version.

Final Thoughts

A culinary tour of Thailand is more than just eating; it’s a journey through culture, family bonding, and discovery. From sizzling Bangkok street food to comforting northern curries in Chiang Mai and fresh seafood in Phuket, every meal added a new layer to our adventure. For families, Thailand offers both excitement and comfort—proof that even the youngest travelers can appreciate a world of flavors.

If you’re planning family travel in Thailand, let food guide your path. Just follow the aromas, keep an open mind, and bring your appetite—you’ll leave with full hearts and even fuller stomachs.
