Easy Apple Slab Pie Your Crowd

Description

A delicious and easy-to-make apple slab pie with a flaky crust and sweet, spiced apple filling.


Ingredients

  • 3 ¾ cups (470 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ tbsp sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp table salt
  • 3 sticks (12 oz or 340 grams) unsalted butter, cubed and kept very cold
  • ¾ cup very cold water
  • 3 ½ to 4 pounds apples, peeled, cored and chopped into approximately ½-inch chunks (about 10 cups)
  • Squeeze of lemon juice
  • to ¾ cup sugar (depending on how sweet you like your pie and how sweet your apples are)
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 rounded tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp ground allspice
  • ⅛ tsp table salt
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream or 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt for the crust.
  3. Add the cold, cubed butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Gradually add the cold water and mix until the dough comes together.
  5. Divide the dough into two portions, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  6. In another bowl, toss the chopped apples with lemon juice, sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt.
  7. Roll out one portion of the dough to fit a baking sheet, then place it on the sheet.
  8. Spread the apple filling evenly over the crust.
  9. Roll out the second portion of dough and place it over the apples, sealing the edges.
  10. Brush the top with heavy cream or egg wash.
  11. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Let cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor.
  • Keep the butter and water very cold for a flaky crust.
  • Let the pie cool slightly before slicing to set the filling.
