Ingredients

  • 2 ½ pounds apples, peeled and cored, then cut into wedges (about 5 large Honeycrisps)
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¾ cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 recipe double pie dough or pre-made crust
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add apples, allspice, cinnamon, salt, and sugar. Cook until apples soften slightly, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in flour, cornstarch, and apple cider vinegar. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  5. Roll out pie dough and line a pie dish with the bottom crust.
  6. Pour apple filling into the crust.
  7. Cover with the top crust, seal edges, and cut vents.
  8. Brush top crust with beaten egg.
  9. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Let cool before serving.

  • Use firm apples for best texture.
  • Chill pie dough before rolling for easier handling.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
