Description
A classic sweet Dutch apple pie with a flaky crust, spiced apple filling, and a buttery crumble topping.
Ingredients
- For the crust: 1 single homemade pie dough (1 sheet)
- For the apple layer: 1/4 tsp lemon zest, 2 tbsp lemon juice (from 1/2 lemon), 5 lb apples (before peeling/coring), 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/3 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 tsp kosher salt, 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 3/4 tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp cardamom (optional), 1 tsp vanilla
- For the crumble topping: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup granulated sugar, 3/4 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 tsp kosher salt, 3/4 cup melted butter (1 1/2 sticks)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Roll out the pie dough and place it in a pie dish. Trim and crimp the edges.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon zest, lemon juice, brown sugar, granulated sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and vanilla. Mix well.
- Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust.
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and salt for the crumble topping. Add the melted butter and stir until crumbly.
- Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
- Let the pie cool before serving.

- Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for the best flavor.
- Let the pie cool completely to allow the filling to set.
